The Great Seal is a symbol of the United States, used to authenticate important documents such as treaties, presidential proclamations, and presidential communications. It is also featured on some currency notes and coins, such as the $1 bill. The seal is used 2,000-3,000 times per year and is held by the U.S. Department of State. It was first used on September 16, 1782, to guarantee the authenticity of a document granting General George Washington full power to negotiate with the British.
