The Taklamakan Desert (塔克拉玛干沙漠) is a desert in Southwest Xinjiang, Northwest China. It is bounded by the Kunlun Mountains to the south, Pamir Highlands to the west, Tian Shan range to the north, and Gobi Desert to the east. Taklamakan has a splendid history and culture. The ancient silk road passes through the whole south end and north end of Taklamakan. Many archaeological materials show that the hinterland of the desert is silent and prosperous.

It is the largest desert in China, tenth largest in the world and the second largest shifting sand desert in the world. It covers an area of 330000 sq km. The pyramidal dunes stand at 300 meters above the plain. The strong wind can blow the sand wall up to 3 times its height. Sand dunes stretch in the desert and often move with the winds.
